Music Teacher & Chorus Director

“We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams.”

Cypress Park Elementary’s Music Program Philosophy
Our Music Program is based on the following benchmarks as established by Orange County Public Schools:
Our students will:
*SING
*PLAY INSTRUMENTS
*READ and NOTATE MUSIC
*LISTEN, ANALYZE, DESCRIBE and EVALUATE MUSIC
*UNDERSTAND and RELATE MUSIC TO CULTURE and HISTORY
*UNDERSTAND and RELATE MUSIC TO OTHER STUDIES and LIFE EXPERIENCES

Cypress Park Elementary Music students have hands-on playing experiences using Orff instruments, participate in expressive movement and space exploration activities including folk dances, contemporary line dances or create our own dances using scarves or other props. Intermediate students also build musicianship by learning to play recorders. All students participate in singing and have performance opportunities for the school and community. These practices promote student achievement and critical thinking. Music is a fundamental form of communication in all cultures, times and places. The knowledge, skills, habits and values students learn are building blocks for lifelong understanding, respect and appreciation for the arts. Every child who comes to class participates in songs and musical activities while learning technical skills that are the building blocks for success not only in music but for developing as a culturally sensitive person. The goal is to give students the confidence and skills to become musical citizens, so they can participate in, create, and enjoy musical activities in their daily lives. I believe in the development of the "whole child". Our students flourish as a result of their meaningful music experiences at our school.

Thanks to The Foundation for Orange County Public Schools our music program was awarded $250 through the License4Learning Arts Education Support Grant. This grant, written by Mrs. Chong-You allowed select students in 3rd, 4th, & 5th grade to get their very own professional recorder instrument without having to pay for it. Thanks to this funding 47 students who did not own their own instrument previously were awarded a free instrument this year. On behalf of these proud new instrument owners, we truly appreciate the support and generosity of the Foundation for Orange County Public Schools. They helped bring the “Magic of Music” into the hands and hearts of these student musicians.
